First, two quick checks before you call anyone
A surprising number of "broken" fridges are victims of something simple. Before booking a repair, check that the temperature dial has not been knocked to its warmest setting, and make sure there is clear space around the fridge and its vents, a fridge crammed against a wall or packed solid with food cannot circulate air properly.
Still warm after that? Then something has genuinely failed, and the pattern of the failure says a lot about the cause.
The usual suspects, in rough order
- Defrost system failure. The most common cause on modern frost free fridges. A failed heater, timer or sensor lets ice slowly smother the evaporator, and cooling fades over days. Frost on the back wall inside is the giveaway.
- Evaporator or condenser fan failure. Cold is made but never moved. Often announced by buzzing or chirping before it fails completely, and commonly the reason a freezer stays cold while the fridge warms up.
- Door seals leaking. A perished seal lets warm humid air pour in, the fridge runs constantly and still cannot keep up. If a sheet of paper slides out of the closed door easily, the seal is done. One of the cheapest fixes there is.
- Thermostat and sensor faults. The fridge misreads its own temperature and simply does not try hard enough. Symptoms swing both ways, warm food or frozen lettuce.
- Refrigerant leak. Slow loss of gas means slow loss of cooling over weeks or months. Needs a leak test, a repair and a re-gas, worthwhile on a sound unit.
- Compressor failure. The one everybody fears, and genuinely the least common of the list. Even a clicking, non starting compressor is sometimes just a failed start relay, a much smaller job.
Why guessing is the expensive option
Every fault above produces roughly the same complaint, the fridge is not cold, but they range from a cheap seal to a compressor. Replacing parts on a hunch burns money fast. While you wait for the repair
Keep the doors shut as much as possible, a closed fridge holds its temperature far longer. Move milk, meat and medicine to an esky with ice or a neighbour's fridge if the inside is already warm. Do not bother unplugging and replugging repeatedly, it will not reset the fault and start ups are the hardest work a compressor does.
